Home-made Passport Photos

Here's how you can make your own passport photos. You'll need a digital camera, photo printer and, of course, your Mac.

  1. Using your digital camera (I used my Olympus 5050), take a mug shot of yourself (tripod or wife-held) against a suitably pale or blue background - thankfully I've got cream walls in one of the rooms in my house. Hey! Option to even not have pants on!

  2. Download the photo into your Mac and crop it to a suitable 4.5cm x 3.5cm size using any photo editing software (I used GraphicConverter).

    > Picture > Size > Scale
    (or Shift+Cmd+Y)

  1. It helps to put a 1 pixel border around the photo to aid cutting.

    > Edit > Add Border

  1. Create a 6 x 4 inch template

    > File > New > Image
    (or Cmd+N)

and Select, Copy, and Paste the photo to make multiple copies on the template.

(Cmd+C to Copy, Cmd+V to Paste)

  1. Print out the template on your printer using photo paper (6 x 4 inch size) with photo ink.

  1. Viola! Passport sized photos. Now just to cut it out... snip snip snip....

I've not made precise price comparisons, but most homes these days have photo-capable printers. Though printer ink may be a bit expensive, photo paper is definitely coming down in price. Best of all, you can have up-to-date photos any time you want. Give it a whirl!
