Memory card readers today
come in all shapes and sizes. But they probably don't come any more
stylish than Moshi's Cardette (Burgundy Red).
Packaged in a nice red box,
the Cardette which measures 3.6" x 2" x 0.8" comes
with a USB extension cord and a detachable strap.
The top of the Cardette
has a solid velvety feel, and this together with the burgundy red
colour makes it seem like a classy product. Unfortunately the bottom
half feels a little plasticky and cheap.
The Cardette is not only
a card reader which supports most memory card formats (e.g. Compact
Flash, Micro Drive, Memory Stick, etc.), it also has two USB 2.0
ports. This means connecting the Cardette to your Mac provides you
with two USB ports instead of losing one.
When plugged in, the Moshi
logo on top lights up - a nice, cool touch. And as with most other
readers there's a little light on the side of the Cardette which
illuminates when a card or USB is plugged in.
To attach the strap, which
comes in matching burgundy, you slot it into and wrap it around
the slit at one end of the Cardette. It fastens by velcro. The strap
attaches perfectly to Moshi's matching Codex laptop cases.
What I like about the Cardette
is it's stylishness. Its bold burgundy colour provides a nice contrasting
match to your white or black MacBook or your silver MacBook Pro.
Its two USB ports make it more than just a card reader and the lights
add a nice touch.
However, what I'm not happy
with is its size. Even though it provides USB ports, if you're simply
looking for a card reader the Cardette is a little too big. Most
card readers are small, slim and light. The Cardette looks slightly
bulky when compared to these other readers.
I also think it's a little
expensive as other card readers cost a lot less. And not only doesn't
it accept Smart Media cards, certain other cards (like the Memory
Stick Pro Duo) require an external memory card adaptor.
