| For
a change, there was a different venue and time for this month's
MacFest. Charly offered his apartment and we opted for afternoon
so as to make it easier to find his place.
Sunil, who was supposed
to talk about iWork 05, couldn't make it at the last minute so I
roped in Mus to fill in the gap. Mus covered a variety of things
like Dictionary in Safari, Grab and Arabic Qwerty. He also talked
about a book called "The Mac is not a Typewriter" (which
he recently reviewed) which highlights the importance of type
and layout.
Next the 'older' generation
present were brought back in time to relive our youth as Shah demonstrated
gaming emulation. He showed how we could download and play the old
arcade games right on our Macs. This time we no longer have to 'insert
coins'!
Then it was break time and
we helped ourselves to some nice ice tea and assorted biscuits.
By special request, Shah
continued after the break and showcased iWork 05. He demonstrated
some of the powerful features of Keynote and Pages, showing how
easy it was to put together a slide show or document.
Charly came on next and
demonstrated Logic Express. He went through several features, showing
how the software creates sounds, building them into tracks to create
songs. Charly played a couple of his own compositions.
Finally, I demonstrated
Evolution TV, a product which allows users to watch and record TV
on their Macs. We tuned in to TV3 and managed to catch a speech
by Pak Lah.
As time was running late
and people had to dash off, I forgot the lucky draws. Ah well, more
prizes for the next 'Fest!
A big thank you to Charly
for allowing us to use his apartment and also to Jen who loaned
us his projector.
